Wood has always been the number one choice for building material given its strength, durability, and cost effectiveness. Wood looks beautiful, smells divine and is incredibly versatile to work with and when treated with care will last a lifetime. We do now need to consider, however, the environmental impact this is having and also the overall impact on our lives as we drive the importance of well-being and balance.
Would I rather buy one wooden deck and enjoy it for couple of years only to realise that I should have spent much of my leisure time looking after it rather than enjoying it to find that I now need to buy a new one to replace it because it rotted and splintered? Well hindsight is an incredible thing. I know the answer now but if I knew the answer beforehand would I have done it differently? The answer is yes. I would have bought an AB Sundeck. Built on steel and finished with PVC deck boards and handrails this bad boy wouldn’t have needed replacing after a couple of years and it pretty much would have looked after itself leaving me to look after myself. Buying one AB Sundeck means I’m also reducing my negative effect on the environment 1. By not using up more trees that I need by buying two or even three timber decks and 2. By having a deck made from steel and PVC which has zero wood content and can be recycled effectively if needs be. It’s a no brainer.
Would I rather spend hours treating and staining a wooden deck every year (or at least getting my dad to) when I could be out playing with the kids, enjoying the outdoors, relaxing on my decking? It’s definitely not the first part. I once painted my timber fence. The end. I do have a timber fence now; I was told that it had been pretreated so that was enough for me. I know it is unlikely that it will last forever and look as good as it does now but I’m hoping that when the neighbours do their side they will do mine as well. (I did try to convince them that a PVC fence was the way forward but they insisted on timber, that’s fine as long as they look after my side too). So the answer is clear, yes? I would rather not treat or stain anything. I just want to get my deck installed and enjoy it forever and do as little maintenance as humanly possible. To be fair I don’t mind the hose, I have to jet wash the flag stones every now and again anyway and technically it’s a glorified water fight and who doesn’t love a water fight?
Would I rather lose £50 or find £50? Again, the answer is not always clear at first but given some thought I would definitely rather not lose £50. I realise that if I buy a wooden deck I will be losing more than £50. It might not seem obvious at first and an AB Sundeck may look like it is more expensive initially but over the life span of each product it doesn’t take a scientist to work out that actually it would be like finding £50 over and over again. An AB Sundeck won’t need me to treat or stain it, it won’t need me to replace it after a few years in the good old British outdoors, it won’t catch fire and it won’t rot. That’s a win for me.
I don’t know about you but I know what I would rather…
