T minus five days and Houston we have a problem!!
Just when you think you’re on track and have made it to taper week without a hitch ready for the big day when you hit a snag, or two snags, two VERY BIG snags!!
Two extremely lucky escapes leaving one Lycra leopard out of the challenge completely and one on a knife edge where only time will tell after complete rest and recouperation.
Both Adam and Derek have been extremely lucky with their lives this week one on a construction site and one a busy main road. We are happy to report that they are both safe but it could have been very different.
Adam was working on site in a 14 tonne digger when the earth moved beneath him causing the digger to overturn throwing Adam out of the drivers seat and into the water below. He was left unconscious and without sensation in his left side leaving medics to believe he may have suffered a heart attack in the process. After being rushed to A&E he was released hours later with non life threatening injuries and a request to return for a scan of his arm and shoulder once swelling has subsided to check if he requires any surgery.
The second incident happened on Saturday when Derek was involved in a serious road traffic accident when a car made a last minute decision to turn, at a junction, into a 20mph Derek Beaumont. After hurtling through the air Derek landed very uncomfortably on the tarmac of a very busy Horwich road leaving him whiplash and heavy bruising to his back, arm and head. Luckily his helmet protected his skull from what could have been a life threatening blow.
This is a huge setback for them both and the rest of the Leopards in Lycra team with Adam being declared unfit to continue and the outcome with Derek hanging in the balance. He has seen his physio who is unsure he can continue and is waiting on results from his GP to see how the week might unfold. At the moment rest and recouperation is the only option as we eagerly await the end of the week for a further update.
