The club has been established in the town for well over 100 years and is well attended by the local community looking to play or simply spectate. When contacted by the cricket club, who were keen to generate some local sponsorship to help them progress the sport in the local town, AB Sundecks had to consider what was on offer.
“Although we already invest quite heavily in numerous local amateur sports teams in the area, along with the town’s professional Rugby League team, after considering what the cricket club were proposing we decided that we could stretch our budget a little further as what they were offering represented good value for money. The Gold Package highlights mean our company brand will be on the playing kit and advertised at the ground and at some point during the season we will get to enjoy the game and the clubs hospitality for a day. These were just a few of the benefits that caught our attention but more so we are able to help a local sporting team to progress in the community amongst children and adults keeping local communities together and promoting healthy lifestyles for the betterment of everyone.”
A spokesperson for the club told us more about their season and achievements “Our first XI play in the Liverpool competition. Having won the league title in 2016, we finished mid table this season. However, this season gave us the opportunity to give some of our young future cricketers the experience of playing at that level - considered the best league in Lancashire.
We run teams from under 9's, 11's, 13's, 15's and 3 senior teams. In addition to this we have a 13's, 15's and a women's team. Some of our younger girls also play in the boys team. One of our 15 year old girls played in both our 2nd and 3rd teams this season and we have also had 4 of our under 15's boys and 4 of our girls selected for Lancashire.”
On Friday evenings from early April to the end of September, Leigh Cricket Club can have close to 100 children ranging from 4 through to 13 years old training with the army of volunteer coaches. These sessions help to engage children in the sport in a fun environment, playing meaningful games related to cricket. The club aims to develop individuals achieve their cricketing potential through specialised 1 to 1 coaching, teaching the technical aspects of batting and bowling.
The support from AB Sundecks will help to buy specialised cricketing equipment enabling the club to encourage more volunteers to take up cricket coaching. Furthermore, it will help to bring in a professional cricketer to improve the clubs performance and generate more silverware for the local town.
